In the Glass — Tasting Notes

Brilliant straw-gold in colour, this Grillo delivers ripe stone fruit without sacrificing freshness. You'll find genuine peach character and cantaloupe notes shadowed by wild flowers and a whisper of mint. The palate feels soft and fragrant, with pleasant freshness throughout—a quality that comes partly from clean acidity and partly from careful handling: gentle pressing, cold maceration, stainless-steel fermentation and two months resting before release. At 13% alcohol with 3.8g/L residual sugar, it's refreshing without being thin.

The Winery — Donnafugata

The Rallo family has stewarded Sicilian wine since 1851, and Donnafugata, launched in 1983, was born when they began championing native varieties as traditional Marsala sales declined. Today the estate spans four separate sites across Sicily: a modern winery with 283 hectares at Contessa Entellina in the hills east of Marsala; 36 hectares in Vittoria to the south-eastern point; 68 hectares on Pantelleria; and 18 hectares on Etna's volcanic slopes. This 2025 vintage was shaped by low rainfall and higher temperatures that pushed the harvest forward; yields fell below average, but the fruit that made it into the bottle hit every mark for quality. On the Contessa Entellina estate, vines grow between 200 and 600 metres above sea level on clay loam with significant limestone content—conditions that give the wine its balance and structure.

At Your Table — Food Pairing & Serving

This is a wine built for the table. Seafood lovers will find it a natural partner for Grillo's affinity with grilled fish, fritto misto or simply prepared shellfish. It's equally at home with summer salads, light poultry dishes and soft cheeses. The wine's balance and freshness suit spicy and Asian cuisine too. Perfect for aperitivo, weeknight suppers, Sunday lunch or summer drinking, it's suitable for both vegetarian and vegan diets. This bottling sits alongside the rest of our Italy selection as a reminder of what modern winemaking can draw from ancient land and time-honoured grape varieties.
