In the Glass — Tasting Notes

Peach and nectarine flesh rounded by vanilla and brown sugar greet you first, with a whisper of Turkish delight in the bouquet. The palate is alive with stone fruit succulence and a seam of gravel-bed minerality that keeps the wine from ever feeling heavy. At 14.5% alcohol and 9.2g/L residual sugar, this sits in that sweet spot between ripe and crisp; the off-dry length has weight without cloying, and the acidity ensures it won't tire you through the glass.

The Winery — Greywacke

Kevin Judd, who spent 25 years as chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay, established Greywacke in 2009. He selected three vineyard sites for this blend: two in the Wairau Plains near Renwick, where cooler nights and alluvial soils planted with classic clones frame the fruit, and one in the upper Omaka Valley. Hand-harvested from mid-March through early April at full ripeness, the fruit was whole-bunch pressed and fermented split-style—most of the juice in old French oak with indigenous yeast, the balance in stainless steel—before six months on yeast lees drew out texture and mineral depth. The 2024 vintage saw drought conditions bring small berries and low yields, yet immaculate fruit ripeness and crisp February nights preserved the acidity that gives this wine its spine.

At Your Table — Food Pairing & Serving

This is serious stuff—a wine that drinks as well on its own as it does alongside roasted chicken with herbs, seafood pastas, or the kind of Asian-spiced food that demands both fruit and freshness. One of the finest examples of Pinot Grigio we've found this season, it sits confidently alongside the rest of our Marlborough selection and reflects what New Zealand continues to achieve with this variety when the winemaker is thoughtful and the vintage cooperates. Drink now through 2027, ideally slightly chilled. Discover other Pinot Grigio & Pinot Gris wines in our range.
