In the Glass — Tasting Notes

Precise minerality meets layered complexity in this northern Rhône Viognier. Bergamot and verbena aromatics drift over white stone fruit and lemon, while a chiselled acid spine and saline grip strip away pretence. The palate is the kind that makes you sit up and return to it throughout a meal rather than simply lingering politely.

The Winery — Château le Devay

Jean-Charles Fournet, a radiologist who became a winegrower, purchased this 18th-century estate in 2005. When winemaker friend Pierre-Jean Villa recognised that the south-facing schist soils suited Rhône varieties, Jean-Charles consulted soil microbiologists and planted 5.5 hectares in 2014, guided by mentors including Christine Vernay and Yves Gangloff. The philosophy: let the land speak. The 2023 vintage benefited from a rainy spring that kept vines vigorous, followed by warm, dry summer weather allowing unhurried ripening. In the cellar, whole bunches were pressed gently and fermented at cool temperatures to preserve primary florals whilst building silkier texture. Malolactic fermentation adds depth without blunting acidity. At 13.5% alcohol and fully vegan-friendly, this wine respects both drinker and vineyard.

At Your Table — Food Pairing & Serving

Food-generous without being heavy, this is equally at home with roasted chicken, buttery seafood, soft cheeses, or lighter dishes. Serve chilled as an aperitif on a sunny afternoon or alongside shellfish and crustacean preparations, spicy and Asian cuisine, white fish, or salads. Perfect for date nights and gifting. Discover why Viognier deserves its place among Europe's most compelling white grapes in our Fruity & Aromatic White Wine selection, and explore more of what we've chosen from France.
