The Winery — John Duval Wines

A sixth-generation South Australian vigneron who made the leap from grape-growing to winemaking, John Duval spent two decades as Chief Winemaker at Penfolds before founding his own label in 2003. His philosophy centres on old vines and respectful cellar work: small ferments, twice-daily pump overs, 15 months in mostly older French oak with just 25% new wood. For the 2022 Entity, he blended fruit from Barossa Valley's oldest vineyard sites—Krondorf, Ebenezer, Tanunda—with 15% from cooler Eden Valley parcels to lock in brightness and prevent heaviness. The result is age-worthy without tasting oaky, a wine that honours family history and contemporary craft. The 2022 vintage itself was exceptional: mild weather through harvest, even ripening, vibrant aromatics.
